What does a vibration meter actually measure?
A vibration meter measures the amplitude and, on more advanced models, the frequency spectrum of mechanical vibration on rotating equipment. Rising vibration or a shift in the frequency pattern typically points to bearing wear, imbalance, misalignment or looseness before it causes a failure.
Do I need a simple meter or a full analyser?
A basic vibration meter is enough for a route-based walk-around check that flags equipment needing a closer look. A multi-parameter vibration analyser adds frequency-domain analysis to actually diagnose the fault type, which is what a serious condition-monitoring programme needs.
